William Clyde Spencer, 82, of Smithfield, VA, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. He was the son of the late Lincoln Vernon Spencer and Mildred Verlie Furlough Spencer. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara Alethia Spencer; son, William Jack Spencer; grandsons, Nathaniel L. Tucker and Christian Angel Spencer; sister, Anne Voliva; and a brother, Joseph Spencer (Diane).
Mr. Spencer started working at the age of 16 on tugboats and became a Master Tugboat Captain. He worked for 38 years with Norfolk Dredging Company. He married the love of his life in 1974 and together they started their family. He cherished his grandsons immensely. He loved his family and friends dearly. Capt. Billy loved telling stories of his youth in Columbia, N.C. He loved to dance and enjoyed opportunities to spend time with family at family reunions. He was always on the go and he always gave a smile and lit up the entire room. Church was always a staple for his family.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, 11 a.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church, Carrollton, VA with burial to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at a reception following the 11 a.m. service at the church.
