William Roberts Moore, Jr. died May 18, 2026.
Bill was born in Norfolk, VA. He was a graduate of Maury High School (president, Class of ’53), Virginia Military Institute (’57), and Washington & Lee University School of Law (’62). He practiced law in Norfolk, VA, and then Smithfield, VA, before being appointed to the bench as a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court judge in the 5th Judicial District of Virginia in 1982 and retired in 2005.
Bill believed in honesty, family, hard work, and exercise. He was a 48-year resident and supporter of the town of Smithfield, VA, an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Kiwanis, an enthusiastic photographer of his family, an avid acquirer of books and woodworking tools, an adventure traveler in his retirement, a strong supporter of VMI, and an old-school gentleman to the end.
He is predeceased by his parents, Mary Virginia Duncan Moore and William R. Moore, Sr., as well as his two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florine H. Moore; children, Sarah A. “Sally” Hurst (Rick), Patricia M. Hathaway (Bill), and William R. Moore III (Donna); nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity UMC in Smithfield on Sunday, May 31, at 4 p.m., with a family burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or donations of your time to those in need.
