Virginia “Jenny” Lee Sporer, 90, of Smithfield passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. She was the daughter of the late Melvin Edgar Henry and Hazel Delores Michael Henry. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Malcolm Ireneaus Sporer, Sr.
She is survived by her children Cidnea Causey (Ray) of Avon, NC, Daria “Dee” Murphy (Steve) of San Diego, CA, Malcolm I. “Rocky” Sporer, Jr (Joanie) of Hampton, VA, Jennifer Casher (Doug) of Fredericksburg, VA; her grandchildren Airan, Kasey, Theresa, Mike, Josh, Allen, Rette, Brad; fourteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren; her sisters, Frances Clark and Judy Lerner (Ray); and a brother, Melvin E. Henry, Jr (Sarah); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Richard Henry, Charlene Bohrer, and Barbara Clark.
Mrs. Sporer graduated from Berkley Springs High School, W.V., followed by nursing school in Winchester, Va. While in nursing school she met and married Mal, becoming a dedicated military wife and mother. As a military wife for over twenty years, they traveled and moved around the world. While in Florida she was editor of the community newspaper, President of the Pine Run Garden Club, volunteered with the Salvation Army and The American Red Cross blood bank. Together they retired in Smithfield where she quickly became active in the community, joining the Smithfield Women’s Club and active in her neighborhood the Villa’s of Smithfield. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. Her kindness and giving spirit will always continue through those who knew and met her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024, 4 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and also at a reception at the Villa’s clubhouse following the service. In honor of Jenny’s request the family ask that you wear bright colors to the services. Internment will occur at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
