Thurman Alvin Mayo, Jr.

May 29, 1959 — January 11, 2024

Smithfield

Thurman Alvin Mayo, Jr. “AL” left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, January 11, 2024.

Al was born on May 29, 1959 what was then Nansemond County, VA. He was preceded in death by his mother Emma Leatha Everett, father Thurman Alvin Mayo, Sr., and sister Debbie Mayo.

Al graduated from Windsor High School. After High School Al served in the United States Navy as a Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operator. After the Navy Al served diligently as an employee of Farm Fresh Grocery Stores and Riverside Health System until retiring in 2022.

Al was a very intelligent and friendly man. Known to many at 6’5” as the gentle giant. Al loved mathematics, history, politics, and most of all his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Al attended Hope Presbyterian Church in Smithfield, Virginia where he was loved and cared for by so many. A devout Christian, Al was a regular attendee of Worship Services, Sunday School, Bible Studies, and a supporter of the Men’s Ministry.

Al was a self-taught bible scholar and known among his friends and pastor as a wealth of knowledge regarding biblical history and Old Testament theology. He was opinionated and outspoken, but never let that stop him from making friends with those he debated with.

Al was a good man and loved by so many. He will be missed daily, but his church family rejoices, knowing that he is once again healthy, happy, and restored in the presence of his Lord, Jesus Christ.

There will be a celebration of Al’s life with military honors, on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Hope Presbyterian Church, 13490 Benns Church Blvd, Smithfield, VA 23430. Interment will follow at a later date at Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery. May God bless his soul.

In lieu of flowers or condolences, Al asked prior to his passing that donations be made instead to his beloved Hope Presbyterian Church in Smithfield, VA. Online condolences may be registered at www.littlesfuneralhome.com.
