It is with heavy hearts and immeasurable love that we announce the passing of Susan Marie Perna of Carrollton, Virginia, who left us on July 6, 2026. Susan is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Frank “Frankie” Perna, who will forever cherish the memories, lessons, and warmth Suzy brought into every moment.
Susan was born on May 21, 1960, to Barbara Bellone and the late William Bellone. She is also survived by her sisters, Nancy Piscatelli, Linda Athanas, Annie Bellone, and Lori Bellone; her brother, Bill Bellone; her mother-in-law, Patricia Fleming; and the late Raymond Fleming. She will also be remembered by her brothers-in-law, Timothy Perna and Brian Perna; her sister-in-law, Lisa Balsan; and as a beloved “Auntie” to numerous nieces and nephews.
Known for her gentle spirit, big personality, unwavering loyalty, and the way she made every person feel valued and loved, Susan was the steady center of her family and the keeper of countless cherished memories. She was born and raised in Ledyard, Connecticut, and attended Ledyard High School with the Class of 1978.
Susan’s passions and pursuits reflected her deep compassion and strong sense of justice. She cared deeply about animal rights, women’s rights, political awareness, and the dignity of the elderly. Her activism included support for PETA, participation in the Women’s March, advocacy related to circus animal welfare, and a lifelong commitment to speaking up for what she believed was right.
She was also a prolific artist and published writer, with numerous articles appearing in major newspapers and magazines.
Frankie was the love of Susan’s life, and she adored him deeply. Their marriage was marked by an exceptionally strong bond, built on devotion, laughter, resilience, and shared joy. Together, they traveled through Europe and the Caribbean, treasured the smallest everyday moments, and found comfort in one another’spresence.
They were also passionate advocates for rescued animals and shared a deep love for the pets they welcomed into their lives. Their partnership felt timeless—each strengthening and completing the other through every challenge, embrace, and memory made together.
Susan expressed a deep love for artistry, fashion, and sewing. She created personalized event memory accordion journals for family and friends, designed fashion-forward dresses, and made playful Halloween costumes.
She was deeply involved with Bra-ha-ha, a breast cancer awareness campaign. Suzy’s exceptional talent was recognized with awards in the “Most Creative” and “Most Humorous” categories.
Susan’s deeply curious mind and a lively sense of humor was inspired by the work and conversations of Christopher Hitchensand Ricky Gervas. Suzy had a way of weaving science, philosophy, and comedy together so seamlessly that every conversation became both a mental workout and a source of genuine laughter.
Though her absence leaves an immersible void, her love, wisdom and larger than life spirit will continue to guide all who knew her. Suzy’s family takes comfort in the countless memories she created and the legacy she leaves behind.
