Susan Douglas Howell

Surrounded by those she loved, Susan Howell passed away peacefully in her home in Smithfield, Virginia.

Born in Hempstead, NY and raised in Garden City, Susan Howell cherished her childhood summers on Cape Cod, where she spent carefree summer days with her brother, Alan Douglas.

She attended Garden City schools and went on to graduate from SUNY Oneonta, later dedicating over 30 years to educating students as a committed and caring public-school teacher.

 In 1980, Susan married the love of her life, David Howell. Together, they shared 45 joyful years of marriage filled with laughter, partnership, and adventure. After retiring in 2005, they settled in Smithfield, Virginia, where they embraced the joys of travel and cruising, creating lasting memories around the world.

Susan was a woman of grace, warmth, and quiet strength. She found great joy in singing, especially as a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church choir, where her voice uplifted many. She was also an active member of the Women’s Club of Smithfield and a loyal friend to many in the community.

She is survived by her devoted husband, David Howell; her loving children, Matthew Howell and Elizabeth Howell; her beloved granddaughter, Lily Howell; and her cherished brother, Alan Douglas.

Susan will be remembered for her generous spirit, her love of song and travel, and the gentle kindness she shared with everyone she met.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 201 Cedar Street, Smithfield, VA, 23430, on August 2, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a repast where friends and family are invited to gather and share cherished memories.

In lieu of flowers, the Howell family kindly requests that donations be made in Susan’s name to the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program.
