Shirley Jean Vernon

Shirley Jean Effler Vernon, 85, of Hampton passed away on February 27, 2023. She was born in Old Fort, North Carolina, the daughter of the late James Leroy Effler and Bertha Gertrude Allison Effler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred James Vernon and two nephews, Kenny Effler and Robert Shelton. She is survived by her daughters, Michelle A. Slabinksi (Joe) and Monique C. Vandegrift (David); grandchildren, Nicole, Kirsten and Zachary; a great grandchild, Derrick; sister, Earline Shelton Jenkins (John); brothers, Howard Effler (Deanie) and Don Effler (Jan); nephew, Dwayne Effler (Leslie); nieces, Rhonda Moore (Mike) and Donita Plemmons (Jeff); and several great nieces and nephews. She was a “Special Mom” to her nieces and nephews, who loved and cherished her family beyond measure. She was a longtime employee of Modern Cleaners in downtown Newport News. Although she made her home on the Peninsula for many years, she had a special place in her heart for her birthplace, the mountains of North Carolina.
