Shirley May Hobgood, 87, of Suffolk, Virginia passed away on June 6, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Marshall James Steppe and Effie Louise Joyner Steppe. She was preceded in death by her nine siblings and one grandson which she loved dearly. She is survived by her five children; Marcia Elks and her husband Ralph, Harold Hobgood, Jr., Angelia Hobgood Bunch and her husband David, Rodney Hobgood, and Lisa McCarson and her husband Tracy. She is also survived by five grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. She was devoted to her family and ensured they knew they were loved. She enjoyed taking trips to visit her daughters in Georgia and Florida, watching birds with her daughter at home, and lunches with her son. She loved her church family and so looked forward to playing cards and having lunch with “the girls” as she referred to them. She was very blessed to have such good friends even though a lot of the time was spent taking her to and from doctor appointments. Shirley served as the Carrollton Baptist Church Sunday School treasurer from 2004 to 2019 and also, as the teller from 1995 to 2000 and she really enjoyed the time she spent on the Communion Committee. She held all of the roles in the church until the time when she could no longer actively participate. She truly loved all those in her Sunday School class and the laughs they shared together. Shirley also played a significant role in the Military Ministries as a volunteer from 2004 through 2010 and received the “Shining Star” award as an Outstanding Volunteer for time and commitment directly from the heart. On June 11, a reception will be held for Shirley’s church family and immediate family at 12:00 Noon following the Sunday morning worship at Carrollton Baptist Church, Carrollton, Virginia. A visitation will be held at Carrollton Baptist Church at 12:45 p.m. on June 11 2023. To honor Shirley, a funeral service will follow at 01:15 p.m. in the church she loved so dearly. A private burial for the family will be held at St. Luke's Cemetery in Smithfield, Virginia immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Carrollton Baptist Church, 14007 Carrollton Blvd, Carrollton, VA 23314.
