Roger Eugene Capps of Portsmouth, VA passed away on June 21, 2024.

Roger was born in Durham, NC. He moved with his family to Virginia during WWII and was raised in Portsmouth, graduated Wilson High School, and like many others, served in the US Army in Germany. Besides commercial and fine art, he enjoyed antique musket competition with the North-South Skirmish Association and the Military Vehicle Preservation Society of Tidewater. He volunteered with the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and Stonewall Camp 380, SCV, along with Portsmouth Cedar Grove Cemetery Foundation for several years in the restoration of historical Cedar Grove.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Ann Voliva Capps, his parents, Roger Holt Capps, Willie Mae King Capps, and his brothers Frederick Merle Capps and Thomas Holt Capps.

Roger is survived by his daughters, Christina and Jennifer Capps and Antonia McElhaney and husband Joseph; his grandchildren, Rachael and Claudia Kilgore and Rosalie and Aubrey McElhaney; and a great-grandchild Atlas. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Ann Benson. His love for friends and family is more than words can tell.

His immediate family has chosen to hold a private service. Burial will be held at St. Luke’s Church in Smithfield, VA. Should you desire, contributions may be made to the animal shelter of your choice. He was a dog’s best friend.
