Battery Park

Robert Ashley Brayshaw, 49, born May 3, 1975 in Columbus, Georgia, passed away August 1, 2024.

Rob, as he preferred to be known, had a lifelong zest for adventure and discovery, filling a bucket list by his early 20s, having taken up skydiving, bungee jumping, traveling throughout Europe and visiting Las Vegas.

Having a big passion for life and an even bigger heart for his loved ones, Rob often gave presents and sent thoughtful messages to those closest to him. They will cherish his love and life long after his passing.

A 1993 graduate of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Virginia, Rob’s earthly life ended in the nearby neighborhood of Battery Park, where he spent childhood summers staying with his grandparents, and more than 10 years living there with family following his father’s retirement from the United States Army in 1991.

Rob moved to Tallahassee, Florida in 2003 where he met his future wife, Stephanie Ballard, while working at Bealls Department Store. The two wed New Year’s Eve 2003.

A great fan of pop culture, Rob was a lifelong fan of the Top Gun and Rocky films. Having his own “eye of the tiger” with a determined spirit, Rob preferred to do things his way and make his own opportunities. While he had many jobs in his life, from Busch Gardens security guard to apartment complex property manager to lawn care business owner to platinum Uber driver, the most significant titles in his life were beloved husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.

After passing, Rob was found with a Book of Psalms in his pocket. Psalms 23, Verse 4: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Rob was preceded in death by his son, Samuel Brayshaw; uncle Bill Brayshaw; grandparents Martin and Jean Watkins; grandparents Bert and Mary Brayshaw; father-in-law Melvin Ballard and his great-great aunt and uncle Mildred and Henry Eley. He is survived by his wife Stephanie Ballard Brayshaw; sons Evan and Matthew Brayshaw; mother-in-law Renae Ballard; parents John and Jeanne Brayshaw; brother Michael Brayshaw; uncle Michael Watkins and cousins Dwight Watkins and Katherine Watkins Marshall and extended family and friends.

A family graveside service will be held at a later date at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Smithfield, VA.
