Mary Sutherland McFarland

Mary Otis Sutherland McFarland, 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2017. Mary was born in Dickenson County of southwestern Virginia and graduated from high school in St. Paul, Va. She attended Hiwassee College and graduated from Radford College with a teaching degree. Mary met her husband of 55 years, Warren McFarland, during their senior year of college and they were married in the summer of 1962. Mary enjoyed a time of teaching in Florida and then being at home in Tennessee and Virginia to raise her children. Family and friends were the joy of Mary’s life and she doted on her children and grandchildren. Mary and Warren were members of St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Hampton Va. Mary was the daughter of the late Caleb W. Sutherland and Clara L. Smith. She is survived by her husband Warren, son David McFarland (Aimee), daughter Mary Anderson (Rodney), Grandchildren Joshua Smak (Caty), Casey Smak, Colin McFarland, Kyle McFarland, April Anderson, Melody Anderson, and brothers Danny and Harry Sutherland. Mary was preceded in death by a sister Betty Allen and a brother Hugh Sutherland. A visitation and memorial service will be held January 6th at 1 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Smithfield, with burial to follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, www.parkinson.org  or other charity of your choice.
