Joseph George Gayle

Joseph George Gayle of Carrollton, VA went home to be with Jesus on October 25, 2023. A loving husband, father, Papaw and great Papaw was born to Fitzhugh Lee Gayle and Doris Nottingham Tennis Gayle in Rescue, VA on August 19, 1932. Preceded in death by his three brothers, Fitzhugh Lee Gayle Jr., William Ray Gayle and Ronald Carrol Gayle. Joe’s siblings include, Joan Rebecca Clark and Margaret Sue Johnson of Carrollton, VA and Linda Faye Green of Hampton, VA. He had numerous nieces and nephews.

 Joe married Annette Thomas on June 2, 1956 and together they had a daughter, Cynthia B. Gayle-Rizza (husband-Anthony Rizza) and a son Thomas Ashton Gayle (wife-Donna S. Gayle). They have six grandchildren, Lauren N. Winters, Jessica L. Mason, Ashley B. Blanks, Natalie Douglas, Christy Woods and Keith Smith; and three great grandchildren, Aynsley G. Mason, Evelyn G. Blanks and Madison Kilgore.

Joe served in the United States Air Force as a radio technician. He was a veteran from the Korean War. After serving his time in the military, he worked in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a telegraphic and cryptographic repair technician. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in August of 1979 after 30 years’ service.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 30, 2023, 1 p.m. at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, VA.  The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Littles Funeral Home, Smithfield.
