Joseph Holleman Barlow, III

Joseph “Joey” Holleman Barlow, III died in his sleep on September 12, 2026. He was born September 16, 1984 in Hampton, Virginia and lived in Smithfield all his life.

A graduate of Smithfield High School, Class of 2002, he was a member of the Football, Baseball and Wrestling teams. He attended Radford University and was a Virginia Tech Hokies Fan. In recent years, he officiated at Little League Baseball and Girls Softball games locally and across the state. He coached the Smithfield High School JV Girls Softball team for the 25-26 season.

Joey loved Cotton Plains Farm and served Virginia Agriculture as President of the Virginia Grain Producers, representing farmers and lobbying at the state and national levels. He also served on the Virginia Cotton Board.

Joey is survived by his precious sons, Joseph “Jay” Holleman Barlow, IV and Christian Robert Barlow and their mother, his former wife, Amber. He is also survived by his father, Joseph H. Barlow, Jr and his stepmother, Shelley Butler Barlow; brothers, Michael Roman Hargrave (Penny) and John Carlton Hibbard; his many nieces and nephews delighted in time spent with Uncle Joey. He will be missed by Grace, Maddox, Gabe, Asher, Carter, Haylie, Bobby, Gavin, Kash and Layla. Joey loved and was loved by a large extended family and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sherry Hargrave Threatt and his infant son, Taylor James Barlow; paternal grandparents, Joseph H. Barlow Sr. and Margaret Taylor Barlow; and his maternal grandparents, John Hargrave and Joyce Ann Hargrave.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, 4 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield. The family will received friends on Friday, September 18, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield, VA.

The family would like to thank the many people who showed Joey kindness throughout his life, especially DeeDee and Carrie Darden and his in-laws, Jim and Robin Flaim.
