John Randolph Davis, Jr.

January 15, 1937 — January 17, 2026

John Randolph Davis, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, in Smithfield, Virginia. A devoted steward of the natural world and a lifelong student of history and nature, John’s life was marked by a deep commitment to conservation, education, and family.

Born on January 15, 1937, in Norfolk, Virginia, John was the son of John Randolph Davis and Mary Harrison Davis. He spent his formative years in Norfolk, attending Larchmont Elementary School, Blair Junior High School, and Maury High School. His early love for the outdoors and science led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia.

Following his graduation, John embarked on a distinguished career with the National Park Service that spanned decades and took him across some of the most iconic landscapes in the United States. He began his service as a seasonal Interpretive Park Ranger at Shenandoah National Park. His permanent ranger career launched from Albright Training Center at Grand Canyon National Park, then on to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and back to Shenandoah National Park. His western assignments included Crater Lake National Park, Lava Beds National Monument, Oregon Caves National Monument, and John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. John spent 19 years as Chief of Interpretation at Petersburg National Battlefield back in his home state of Virginia. Through these roles, he shared his passion for nature and history with countless visitors from around our country and the world.

John’s dedication to preserving America’s natural heritage was matched only by his enthusiasm for experiencing it firsthand. An avid outdoorsman and naturalist, he found joy in deer hunting, turkey hunting, waterfowl hunting, as well as both freshwater and saltwater fishing. His deep knowledge of flora and fauna made him not only a skilled sportsman but also a respected naturalist among peers. John served 8 ½ years in the Virginia National Guard and was a man of many talents - a woodcarver, a musician, an avid reader, a gardener and a storyteller. He was a fitness devotee before it was widely popular and got many started on their own fitness journey. John was a Weber grill enthusiastic since the 1970’s and converted many family members and friends to charcoal grilling over the decades. These qualities reflected his enduring curiosity and determination to live life fully.

John is survived by his beloved wife Marion Stanley Davis; son Jesse Randolph Davis and his wife Lisa Brickhouse Davis; granddaughters Cloey Elizabeth Davis and Emily Ann Davis; daughter Mary Elizabeth Davis and her husband William Ingraham; sister Martha Lillian Rogers and her husband Daniel Rogers; nephews Walter Rogers and Daniel Rogers; sister-in-law Susan Stocker Jankovic; niece Tanya Harkins; nephew Robert Jankovic; sister-in-law Ann Stocker Branch; nephew Andrew Branch; niece Elizabeth Freedman; nephew David Barnes; and niece Janet Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents John Randolph Davis and Mary Harrison Davis; sisters Nancy Adelene Davis, Mary Elizabeth Barnes and her husband Robert Barnes; and brother-in-law Robert Eugene Branch.
