John Walter Carveth

Nov 8, 1939 — Jun 6, 2026

Smithfield

John Walter Carveth was finally hit by the donut truck on June 6 th 2026. Born to Lois Carveth (Digman) and Gerald Carveth on November 8 th 1939 in Chicago Illinois. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Julie Carveth (Wallace), his two daughters Lindsey Owens, Kimberly Porzio and his three granddaughters, Morgan Owens(16), Kierra Porzio(16) and Kylie Porzio(11).

John graduated from the University of Illinois with honors in some degree that he never really used. He was energetic and creative in the free time of his early years, renovating flats and building boats. He enjoyed working in the world of marketing before owning a business that created displays for national forests and other organizations. In his late 30s, he moved to Colorado for work and met Julie. Julie states she fell for John because, “He was the only man I ever met who could actually hold a conversation.” He finally settled into a family life with her and a comfortable job at US West in Denver. Many family summers were spent in the mountains of Colorado. They went camping, boating, hiking and white-water rafting down rivers with, at best, questionable safety (He and Lindsey tried kayaking once and gave it up immediately). The family made tradition out of trips to Nederland and Estes Park in particular where John swears he was only chased by a bear that “one time”. The memories of the many camping excursions he created with his family are absolutely invaluable to his wife and daughters.

John developed many useful skills throughout his life that served him and his family well. He was a jack of many trades and could MacGyver almost any old Goodwill find back into nearly working condition. His use of duct tape, wood putty and super glue was nothing short of inspirational.

During his retirement, he was unable to stay still for very long. He created another business called “Mending Fences,” attended many art classes that included sculpture, water color painting and stained glass. He created many pieces that are still hanging in his family’s homes today.

John had many accomplishments in his life. He obtained a pilot license, two MBAs and could easily knock a growling squirrel off a tree branch from 60 yards away using only a slingshot. He was a man who took pride in being proactive and who loved building and mending things with his own two hands.

His cremated remains will be laid to rest in Holdenville Cemetery in Oklahoma, next to his sister, Audrey Ellis on Saturday, July 25 th at 10:00am. He will be missed by many and forever sought by mosquitos. Online condolences may be registered at www.littlesfuneralhome.com
