Janet Hope Edwards

Sep 25, 1951 — Oct 22, 2026

Smithfield

Janet Hope Edwards, 75, of Smithfield, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026. She was the daughter of the late Newett Drew Edwards and Annie Laurie Bason Edwards. She is survived by her sister, Georgianna Edwards Skinner; nieces, Laurie Skinner and Loretta McIntosh; and a nephew, Mills Bason.

Janet was a 1971 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. She went on to attend Tidewater Community College, where she earned an associate degree in accounting. She worked as an accountant for Suffolk Social Services until her retirement.

Janet had deep ties to her community and generously gave her time and talents to many organizations. She was a longtime member of the Suffolk Lions Club and a member of the Real Smithfield Jaycees, where she helped with the annual Smithfield Christmas Parade. She also volunteered with United Way, organized benefits for Relay for Life, and supported local horse, dog, and cat rescue organizations. Her dedication to helping others was evident in the many causes she embraced throughout her life.

Books were one of Janet’s greatest passions. She volunteered at book sales for both the Hampton Public Library and the Smithfield Public Library, where her knowledge of authors was truly remarkable. An avid reader, Janet had read so many books that she could often recommend just the right author to someone searching for their next great read. Both libraries were fortunate to have her knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedicated assistance.

Janet’s love of books also led her to open a bookstore called Chapters at the Williamsburg Antique Mall. She carefully stocked her shelves with current authors and new hardcover books, searching used bookstores and library sales for just the right additions. Her devoted readers also contributed books they had finished, helping keep her shelves filled with wonderful selections. Janet was meticulous in her work, often carrying an extensive list of titles she was seeking and knowing exactly how many copies she had of every book. Her bookstore reflected not only her love of reading but also her remarkable memory, organization, and commitment to helping others discover books they would enjoy.

Another of Janet’s great passions was horses, especially Arabian horses. For many years, she raised, trained, and showed them, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm with others. She worked with 4-H programs and assisted with the Old Dominion Arabian Horse Show and the Old Dominion Futurity. Her love of horses also brought lasting friendships into her life, including one of her dearest friends, Claudia Lamb. Janet was a member of numerous local, state, and national Arabian horse organizations and remained devoted to the Arabian horse community throughout her life.

Janet was also a member of the Tidewater Clerical League and a charter member of the National Garden Clubs, reflecting her varied interests and willingness to become involved in the activities and organizations she valued.

While Janet’s many interests and volunteer activities touched countless lives, some of her most treasured relationships were with the people who became family to her over the years. She shared a special bond with her dear friends Virginia Hope (Puddy), Claudia Lamb, and Joan Blassengame Davis. These friendships were a cherished part of her life, offering love, companionship, and memories that will continue to be treasured.

Janet also loved her Smithfield Villas family and enjoyed attending functions at Benn’s United Methodist Church. The friendships and sense of community she found there were an important part of her life.

Janet will be remembered for her generous heart, her remarkable knowledge of books, her lifelong love of horses, and her dedication to the many organizations and people who enriched her life. She leaves behind a legacy of service, friendship, and shared passions that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
