Hollis Carroll Morgan, 74, of Smithfield, VA passed away suddenly early Saturday, August 2, 2025.
As the daughter of the late Carl Frederick VanGilder and Sarah Elaine (Merrill) VanGilder, she was born and raised in Fairmont, WV, graduating from West Fairmont High School in 1969. During her formative years, she enjoyed helping her parents with the farm chores, especially spending time with her father outdoors and learning gardening techniques from her mother. She trained as a seamstress as well, working at the Jones department store performing alterations, until she met and married the love of her life, David Earl Morgan.
David and Holly married 52 years ago and spent the last 50 years in Smithfield, VA. She was a dedicated mother, raising their 4 children, using the skills she learned early in life to make a loving home for the family: tending a garden, providing home cooked meals, and sewing clothes for her children. As her children aged, she opened her home to other children, running an in-home childcare business for 20 years, providing love and guidance for other children, who affectionately called her “Ms Holly.” She enjoyed visiting greenhouses and nurseries to purchase plants and flowers to tend as well as visiting craft fairs and craft stores as she would create many hand-crafted decorations for her home.
She is survived by her husband David, four children Craig D Morgan of Windsor, VA, Danielle C and Scott Miller, Chad E and Lee Morgan, and Melynda S Morgan of Smithfield, VA, six grandchildren, Helaina and Emily Miller, Colin and Autumn Morgan, and Darren and Miranda Upton, siblings Carl Frederick VanGilder Jr (wife Sandra), Sandra Malone (husband Lynn), and Martin VanGilder (wife Linda) of Fairmont, WV, brother-in-law Kenneth Newbrough of Vincent, OH, multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and children who passed through the doors of her home and kept a place in her heart. In addition to her parents, Holly is preceded in death by her sisters Carla Ann VanGilder and Karen Mae Newbrough.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 1 P.M., at Bethany United Methodist Church, Smithfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association at https://donorservices.alz.org
