Herbert Daniel (Danny) Franklin passed away on January 27, 2023, following an 8-month battle with mesothelioma. Danny passed away at home with family by his side.
Danny was born in West Virginia to Betty R. Franklin and the late Ishmael Franklin. He spent his first 3 years there before moving to Portsmouth. Graduating from Deep Creek High School, he entered an apprenticeship at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. From apprentice welder he rose to welding supervisor, ship’s superintendent, then transferring to Code 138, ultimately retiring from there after 371/2 years.
He is survived by his mother, Betty, his wife of 54 years, Gail, son Bradford and wife Christine, granddaughter Constance, brother, Ishmael Ray and wife Wanda, a nephew Jody, nieces Tammy and Carrie Markowitz and a large “adopted family”.
Danny was an avid surfer, loving the beaches. He participated in historical reenacting, traveling to many events. As a car enthusiast, he taught a semester of car repair at TCC. He enjoyed his classic vehicles, attending car shows and charity fund raisers. He also enjoyed his woodworking and leather working.
Danny was a past member of Midday 132 Masonic Lodge of Portsmouth.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Meso Foundation of Alexandria, VA or the charity of your choice are requested.
As per Danny’s request, there will be no formal service.
