Douglas Paris Redman

May 28, 1941 — January 28, 2020

Douglas (Doug) Paris Redman, 78, of Surry, VA, passed away on January 28, 2020.  Doug was born on May 28, 1941, in Newport News, Virginia, to his parents, Sherlock Hilliard Redman and Lena Mae Paris Redman, both who predeceased him. His older brother, Ronnie Redman, also predeceased him. Doug is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carolyn Sue Helman Redman, his younger brother, Thomas Redman and his wife Ann of Camden Point, Missouri, former sister-in-law, Nancy Redman, three nephews, two nieces, one great nephew, several great nieces, and many cousins. Doug graduated from Warwick High School in 1959 and shortly after graduation, joined the US Marine Corp, serving on active and reserve duty for approximately 6 years.  Doug served in evangelistic ministry with Youth for Christ as a Bible Club director for several years, during which time he suffered a nearly fatal motorcycle accident and later returned to full health. From 1974 to 1976 he served as Youth Pastor at Denbigh Baptist Church in Newport News. He attended Washington Bible College in Lanham, Maryland from 1976-1977. In 1989, he received his Mechanical Engineering Technology degree from LeTourneau University in Longview Texas.  Doug worked many jobs, including Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News Housing & Redevelopment Authority, Rickmond Engineering, Sussex Service Authority, and several other engineering contractor firms in the peninsula area. After moving to the Surry area, in 1986 he became a member of Bacons Castle Baptist Church, where he served as Sunday school teacher for the couples class, Awana commander, trustee, deacon, youth leader,  choir member, and in many other areas. Doug joined the Gideons International ministry in 1986 and served in local camps for over 33 years, as president and church speaker. He retired in 2007 to his home in Surry and lived there until he went to his heavenly home after being hospitalized for approximately one month.  His favorite interests were history, cars, airplanes, gospel music, and boats. He enjoyed playing his stand-up string bass and was a private pilot for several years. Visitation of friends and family will be held on Sunday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Bacon's Castle Baptist, 86 Bacon’s Castle Trail, Surry, Virginia, with a celebration of his life immediately after the visitation at 3:00 p.m., followed by internment in the Old Brick Church cemetery near the church. The family will receive friends for a reception at Bacon’s Castle Baptist Church immediately after the graveside farewell. His wife requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to The Gideons International, c/o the Smithfield Camp, P.O.
