David Berryman Hux, of Poquoson, passed away peacefully at age 87 on Friday, June 9, 2023. He was born to long lines of farming families in Surry County, Virginia. He graduated from Surry High School in 1954 and married the love of his life, Barbara Ruth Bell in 1956. Together they continued the farming tradition until he became employed at Newport News Shipyard and moved their family to Poquoson in 1976. He was active in the Baptist Church throughout his life and belonged to Emmaus Baptist Church in Poquoson. He was an ordained deacon. He served his country in the United States Navy Reserves during the Cold War and served his community as a member of the Surry Town Council in the 1970s. He was a 62-year member, and past master of Jefferson Masonic Lodge in Surry, as well as past district deputy grand master of the 31st Masonic district of Virginia. After retirement from the shipyard in 1995, he became the beloved “Pop” to his two granddaughters whom he cherished. He owned and operated his lawn care service through the age of 80.
David was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Mary Berryman Hux. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his two sons, David and his wife Teresa Evans Hux of Poquoson, Donald of Harrisonburg and granddaughters Stephanie and Melanie of Poquoson, brother Ollie Hux and his wife Ellie of Broomfield, Colorado as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, David and Barbara were blessed to have a multitude of very dear neighbors and friends that are considered part of their extended family. The Hux family will be forever grateful for the loving kindness and friendship shown to our parents.
David’s sons, David and Donald, would like to share with everyone the love, respect and admiration we have for our father and express our greatest appreciation for the Christian example he set for us.
The Hux family would like to recognize and extend our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Mennowood Retirement Community and The Newport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the outstanding care and kindness shown to David and our family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Emmaus Baptist Church in Poquoson at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 16th. Friends will be greeted from 6:00 – 7:00 pm and immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held at Moore’s Swamp Baptist Church cemetery in Surry on Saturday, June 17th at 11:00 am. Little’s Funeral Home in Smithfield is handling the funeral arrangements with sincere appreciation from the family for their outstanding service.
