Darrell Glen Mayo

July 20, 1955 — May 13, 2025

Windsor

Darrell Glen Mayo, 69, of Windsor, Virginia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. It is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing. A beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Darrell will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and his unwavering love for God, family, and friends.

Born on July 20, 1955, in Charlottesville, Virginia, Darrell was the son of Shirly G. Mayo and the late Paul R. Mayo. He was raised in Windsor, VA, alongside his sister, Denise M. Fulgham, and was a 1973 graduate of Windsor High School.

As a young man working at Peoples Pharmacy, Darrell spotted a young lady who caught his eye — that young lady would become his high school sweetheart and his devoted wife of 46 years, Nancy B. Mayo. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, and service.

A true people person, Darrell found joy in being around others. He loved going places, meeting friends for breakfast at his favorite local spots, spending time in fellowship, or simply striking up conversations that often led to lasting friendships.

A faithful servant of the Lord, Darrell was a long-time member of Smithfield Baptist Church, where he served in numerous roles: deacon, chairman of the deacons, Sunday school teacher, a member of the finance and stewardship committee, and pianist. His faith extended into his broader community as well — he was a proud moderator and vice-moderator of the Blackwater Baptist Association from 2011–2016, and he served on the Memorial Committee of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the Virginia Baptist Mission Board. Additionally, he took great pride in participating in a prison ministry for over 30 years, offering hope and sharing the Gospel with those incarcerated. Darrell also found spiritual fellowship at his second home in Avon, North Carolina, where he attended St. John United Methodist Church and continued his calling as a Sunday school teacher.

Professionally, Darrell worked most of his life in sales, with a brief time in insurance. His true passion, however, was in the automotive industry, where he spent over 30 years in sales and management. He took immense pride in customer satisfaction, and many of his clients became lifelong friends.

Above all, Darrell loved his family. He adored his wife, daughter, and most especially his granddaughter, who brought him immeasurable joy.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy B. Mayo; his daughter Jennifer M. Bell, her husband Sammy C. Bell and his granddaughter Madelyn “Maddie” E. Bell, of Avon, NC; his mother, Shirley G. Mayo of Suffolk, VA; his sister, Denise M. Fulgham and husband Tom W. Fulgham; his niece Kelly A. Fulgham; his nephew Steven W. Fulgham and wife Mallory W. Fulgham (great niece, Lila and great nephew, Thomas) all from Memphis, TN and many extended family members who will miss him dearly.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Family Life Center at Smithfield Baptist Church.

A celebration of life service will be held at Smithfield Baptist Church on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 1 p.m. with burial to follow in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Smithfield Baptist Church, 100 Wainwright Dr. Smithfield, VA 23430, St. John United Methodist Church P.O. Box 129 Avon, NC 27915 or to the GBS-CIDP Foundation International at https://p2p.onecause.com/gbs-cidp-donate/donate in honor of Darrell’s life of faith and service.
