Charles Swain Davis, 91, passed peacefully into the arms of Heaven on August 14th, 2025, surrounded by love. Born to the late Hazel W. and John Davis, and beloved brother to the late Ann Davis Austin, Swain lived a long, full life marked by dedication to family, service, and community.
A devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Swain’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family and caring for animals.
After graduating from Smithfield High School, Swain proudly served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1954. He went on to build a remarkable 47-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he was admired for his unwavering work ethic and loyalty.
Swain was a lifelong member of Benns United Methodist Church and a proud member of the Carrollton Ruritan Club for over 60 years. He especially loved being part of the annual Fish Fry.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: three sons, Jeff (Kathy) of Norfolk, VA; Greg and Charles “Chuck” of Carrollton, VA; one granddaughter, Natalie (Chris) Garman of Westminster, MD; and his treasured great-granddaughter Charlotte. He is also survived by his nieces Ann (Patrick) Buckley of Orlando, FL, and Cynthia (Philip) Raiford of Sedley, VA; his great-niece Jessica (Michael) Poulter; great-great-niece Avery; and great-great-nephew Aristides (Ari).
The family would like to thank The Ballentine Assisted Living for the excellent care given to Charles the past year and a half.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Swain’s life will be held on Monday, August 18th at 11 a.m. at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Smithfield, VA.
