Betty Lou DeLozier passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 9, 2026, in Smithfield, VA. She was 87. Born in Graysville, Ohio, Betty graduated from Linden McKinley High School. Following her graduation, Betty met and quickly married her late husband Gerald “Jerry” DeLozier. She worked several jobs at a local grocery store, a shoe store, and eventually as a telephone operator, before taking on a role as homemaker following the birth of her daughters.
Despite her roots in Columbus and her devotion to the Ohio State Buckeyes, Betty eventually made the move to Virginia Beach before settling in Smithfield with her daughter, Denise, and four of her grandchildren. Known affectionately as “MeeMaw” or sometimes the “Walmart Ninja” when she got away from her family while shopping. She played an enormous role in her grandchildren’s life, always around to help make them lunches for school and attend every sports game. She loved watching NCIS and Law & Order and her family often joked that she had solved so many crimes on TV she could probably get away with one. Her grandchildren fondly remember that she enjoyed collecting old coins, Betty Boop memorabilia, and loved anything to do with pigs.
Betty lives on through the unrivaled recipes of her potato salad, deviled eggs, and buckeyes. When she wasn’t preparing these, she loved Wendy’s chili and a frosty, or a peanut butter and pickle sandwich.
Some of her favorite songs included The Great Pretender by The Platters, Angels Among Us by Alabama, and anything country music. She also loved to sit in the sun and watch the birds. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you enjoy one of her favorite songs or take a turn in the sunshine and listen to the birds a while in memory of her.
She will be dearly missed by all here on Earth but now resides peacefully in heaven with those who have long awaited her arrival.
She was the daughter of the late Clayton Edwin DeVore and Grethel Beatrice Winland DeVore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald William DeLozier; a son, Gerald DeLozier; a sister, June DeVore; a brother, Edwin DeVore; and her beloved Boston Terrier Jasmine and cat Marie. She is survived by her daughters, Janine Hiles (Gregg) and Denise Baylous (J.D.); grandchildren, Jason and Chad (Daesha) Hiles, Hunter, Peyton, Logan, and Lucas Baylous; great-grandchildren, Haylyn, Kensington, Coleson, and Eric Hiles; many nieces and nephews; and her dear friend and caretaker Lynda Sutherland.
Betty will be laid to rest alongside her husband in a small family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Columbus, Ohio. A celebration of her life with family and friends will be held at a later date.
