Bessie Berryman Scott

Bessie Berryman Scott suddenly departed this world on September 4, 2025.

She was born on June 26, 1940 in Surry County, Virginia. Her family moved to Burwell’s Bay where she later met her future husband, Glen Scott. She graduated from Smithfield High School and soon thereafter, married Glen in Rushmere and they moved to Smithfield.

During her lifetime, Bessie was employed at The Bank of Smithfield, Smithfield Packing, Gwaltney of Smithfield and the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles.

Bessie volunteered for many years with the box office of the Smithfield Little Theater. She was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church and participated in various Circles and other groups. She was a proud Republican, at one time becoming President of the Virginia Federation of Republican Women. She worked with the VFRW for many years, assisting with elections, both local and statewide. During her last years, she was a member of the Smithfield Women’s Club.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Eleanor Berryman, her husband Glen Scott, Sr., her brother-in-law, Darwin and her sister, Ruth Ward Berryman. Surviving her are her daughter, Shari (husband Michael and son William) and her son, Glen. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Chapman, nephew Hank (wife Pam) and niece, Barbara and their children and grandchildren. She was a loving pet parent who was pre-deceased by her last cat, Precious. Finally, she leaves behind many neighbors and friends across the state of Virginia.

The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 31 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield, VA. Burial will be private at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bessie’s memory to the Isle of Wight Humane SocietyTrinity United Methodist Church and the Smithfield Women’s Club.
