Benton McEwen James

July 30, 1940 — May 5, 2026

Elberon

Benton McEwen James, 85, of Elberon, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He was the son of the late Benton Lloyd James and Nola Doris Edwards James. He is survived by his wife, Carole Lane James; children, Alan “Booga” James (Tonya), LuAnn “Sis” Shultz (Winston), Kay “Toots” Tate (Matt); grandchildren, Matthew James (Katie), Adam James, and Jocelyn Shultz; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Blakely, and Beau James; sisters, Faye Blume and Sue Thomas; numerous nieces and nephews; stepsons, Jessee Tate, (son Fisher) and Mickey Lane. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Phil James.

He was born and raised in Surry County. He graduated from Surry High School where he played basketball and baseball and was a member of the FFA (Future Farmers of America). He was a member of Bacon’s Castle Baptist Church and was a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a lifelong farmer and found great joy in working the same land that had been passed down in his family. He thoroughly enjoyed his cows, even when they got out which was quite frequently. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding. He especially loved softball, where he played, coached, and managed many teams. He was inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame in 2007.

Daddy will be buried on his farm in a private family service. As you know, Daddy never met a stranger, and he could always strike up a conversation with anyone. He touched so many lives in different ways. Because there will not be a public service, we would truly love to hear any memories or stories you have of him. Please feel free to post them on the condolence page—this would mean so much to our family, and we will cherish reading each one.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Surry Volunteer Fire Department or plant a tree in his honor.
