Ay Khiv

March 11, 1949 — October 17, 2025

Newport News

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ay Khiv, who left this world on October 17, 2025, at 9:44 p.m., at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, after a courageous battle with cancer. He spent his final moments surrounded by his loving wife Sareth Chap, his son Rithy Chap, and his daughter-in-law Victoria Chap, during his final breath.

Ay was born on March 11, 1949, in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. A man of unwavering discipline and integrity, he lived a life defined by service, strength, and devotion to his family. He proudly served as a combat medic in the Cambodian military, caring for others with courage and compassion. Through his service and alliance with the U.S. Armed Forces, Ay was able to come to the United States and begin a new life filled with hard work, perseverance, and hope.

Over the years, he dedicated himself to many trades—working in the medical field, transitioning to pediatric and structural welding, and later focusing on shipping and manufacturing.

He eventually settled and made his home in Newport News, Virginia, after living in several places along the East Coast, including Rhode Island and Maine. Life took him to many places, and he carried those experiences with quiet resilience. Ay spoke multiple languages, traveled as a young man, and kept much of his past to himself—leaving behind a life full of stories that few ever heard but that shaped the man he became.

Known for his strong will and direct nature, Ay was stoic, stubborn, and always pushed others to meet his standards. Beneath that tough exterior was a deeply kind-hearted, intelligent, and selfless man who cared deeply for his family and community. He practiced tough love, believing that true care came through strength and honesty. He valued education, often reminding his children to “use your brain instead of your hands,” and he lived with an unshakable sense of honor, discipline, and patriotism.

A devout Buddhist, Ay found peace and purpose through his faith. He loved his wife Sareth unconditionally and cherished his children and grandchildren more than words could express. Though often reserved, he always looked out for others’ best interests and found quiet ways to help those around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sareth Chap, and his children: Savath Khiv (married to Somaly Khiv) and their children Kassidy, Kody, Korey, and Kasey; Sovann Khiv; Savy Khiv; Saorithya Phing (married to Sophath Phing) and their children Jazmine Soriya, Tidus Chandara, and Magnolia Chantrea; Rithy Chap (married to Victoria Chap), awaiting the arrival of their daughter Emma Chap, due October 20, 2025; Vibol Chap; and Oceany Chap.

Ay’s life was one of honor, service, and love. His quiet strength, devotion, and wisdom will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Though he may no longer walk beside us, his lessons, laughter, and love will continue to guide the generations he leaves behind.

“Those we love never truly leave us. They live on in the kindness they showed, the comfort they gave, and the love they brought into our lives.”
